Veterans Bank’s WWII Exhibit showcased at SM City Baguio
BAGUIO CITY – In response to community demand and a special request from the City Government of Baguio, Philippine Veterans Bank opened its World War II Exhibit, called “War of our Fathers,” at SM City Baguio- from October 3, 2023 until October 17, 2023.
The Exhibit, which showcases the historical significance of World War II and pays tribute to Baguio’s resilience, was officially opened by Veterans Bank Director Reynaldo Velasco, Defense Undersecretary, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Administrator Reynaldo Mapagu, and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong. They were joined by SM City Baguio Assistant Mall Manager Laine de Lovino, Baguio City Tourism Officer Jose Maria Rivera as well as Veterans Bank Special Projects Director Atty. Federico Manalo, Vice-President Andres Saracho of the Bank’s Veterans Affairs Office, and Veterans Bank Baguio Branch Head Jacqueline Emman.
The Exhibit was initially displayed at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center from September 3-12, 2023 in commemoration of the surrender of the Japanese forces on September 3, 1945. It was later transferred to the Philippine Military Academy on September 15-30, 2023. On the Exhibit’s return to the city, Mayor Magalong said he hopes more people will be able to see the Exhibit, become more aware of the bravery and patriotism of Filipinos, and and learn from the lessons of WWII.
The Exhibit aims to tell the public of the critical role played by Filipino veterans in WWII. It has 52 panels of photographs and narratives of WWII as well as artifacts and memorabilia as a tribute to all Filipino veterans. Special panels dedicated to Baguio’s important role in Philippine history were featured being the site of fierce battles both at the beginning and the end of the Japanese Occupation.
Veterans Bank Chairman Roberto F. de Ocampo said, “This exhibit not only reminds us of our history but also honors the courage and strength of our Veterans who lived through those challenging times. Baguio has a distinct history during World War II, and this exhibit allows our community to reflect on our past, appreciate our heritage, and come together to honor those who fought for our freedom.”
